BACK TO THE CROSS

We were fishing all night in a boat on the sea
A young man approached us said, “Follow me”
We left all we had and we followed this man
Sharing his life we were a part of his plan

We roamed all the countryside for three long years
Sharing his hopes all his dreams all his fears
Healing and miracles, people to save
We never believed the road would lead on to his grave

The road led us on to the cross
A time of confusion of fear and of loss
We never had realized the price it would cost
We couldn’t go back. The road led us on to the cross

We were there in the garden on that fateful day
Trying to stay awake, trying to pray
We had no idea just how it would end
There in the garden, Jesus betrayed by a friend

Scared and surrounded we turned and we ran
We even denied that we knew of this man
We thought we had failed that the battle was lost
We thought he would rule. Instead he was hung on a cross

The road led us on to the cross
A time of confusion of fear and of loss
We never had realized the price it would cost
We couldn’t go back. The road led us on to the cross

They mocked him they beat him they spat in his face
The most innocent man in the whole human race
Hung between criminals Jesus he died
Our leader was dead. So we just stood there and cried

We were gathered together afraid in a room
We told how we saw the stone rolled from the tomb
And then he was with us. A time to be brave
Rejoice hallelujah. Jesus he rose from the grave

We need to look back to the cross
A time of redemption of innocence lost
We never can fathom the price that it cost
I will return, have to look back to the cross
